City Year's Second Annual Family Service Day A Success

FSD
City Year volunteers work together to paint an Arthur-themed mural in one of Ferebee-Hope's hallways.
On Saturday, November 14, 2009, City Year Washington, DC held its second annual Family Service Day at Ferebee-Hope Community School in Southeast DC. City Year corps members, 40 Ferebee-Hope students, and nearly 100 external volunteers came out to help beautify the school's hallways and classrooms. Executive Director Jeff Franco and Ferebee-Hope Principal Sharron Stroman helped kick-off the day with remarks.

The service day included a range of projects for volunteers as young as 3 years old, all with the goal of providing an opportunity for families to serve the community together. Volunteers completed a number of projects, including painting Dr. Seuss murals, a Where the Wild Things Are mural, music-themed murals, and completing a "Hands of Hope" mural in the school's main hallway that included the handprints of the volunteers. In addition, younger volunteers and their parents painted colorful rocks that will be used to edge the school's trees and created care packages to donate to Covenant House, a homeless shelter for youth in the DC area. The National Cable & Telecommunications Team, which serves daily at Ferebee-Hope Community School, reported that the Monday after the project the staff and students were extremely pleased with how beautifully their hallways were brightened.

If you are interested in doing physical service with City Year, the next service day is on Saturday, December 12 at King Greenleaf Recreation Center (201 N Street, SW). Contact Joel Shuherk for more information.
