Don't miss City Year Opening Day this Friday, October 2, as City Year Washington, DC officially kicks-off its 10th anniversary year of service with the largest corps in DC history! We will be celebrating the 100 City Year corps members as they pledge to serve more than 1,700 hours to make a difference in the DC community.

The ceremony will be held at Freedom Plaza (13th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW) from 11am-12pm. Featured speakers will include Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr., and Deloitte's Managing Partner of Greater Washington Gary Tabach.

Meet the 2009-2010 City Year Washington, DC Corps Members

Summer is over and City Year Washington, DC's newest and largest group of corps members is ready to serve! Below is a snapshot of this year's corps members:

  • Our 100 corps members hail from the DC metropolitan area (48%) and 29 other states.
  • 66% of corps members are college graduates, 11% have some college experience, 22% are high school graduates, and 1% has some graduate school experience. 
  • 47% of the corps members are male and 53% are female.

Other fun facts about the 2009-2010 corps members:

  • One corps member had City Year corps members in his class when he was in elementary school.
  • One corps member moved from Senegal to do City Year in DC because his sister participated in a service day with City Year Boston.
  • Two corps members played Division I football in college.
  • Out of our 100 corps members, two are twin sisters and four other corps members have a twin sibling not serving with City Year.
  • One corps member will have earned her master's degree by the time she graduates from City Year.

City Year Washington, DC Launches New and Improved Blog!

In September, City Year Washington, DC launched an improved and more sophisticated blog. City Year blogWashington, DC originally launched a blog in 2007, but with the help of a pro bono consulting team from Corporate Executive Board the blog has been overhauled and significantly updated. The re-launched blog has a cleaner look and now provides one location to follow and track all of City Year's social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the City Year website. City Year Washington, DC staff and corps members will be updating the blog at least three times a week throughout the year, using it as a forum to discuss their service, post opportunities to volunteer with City Year, and give an inside look into the life of City Year corps members. Alumni Help Welcome City Year Washington, DC's Newest Corps

On Wednesday, September 2, the City Year Alumni Association of Washington, DC kicked off the year with a welcome back BBQ at Rock Creek Park. Over 160 City Year corps members and alumni joined together as the grill was fired up, team building games were played, and stories were told. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time and it was a great kick-off to a year of Alumni Association activities. The Alumni Association held its first board meeting last night and will be holding the Alumni Association meeting, open to any alumni in the area, tonight at 7:30pm at City Year Washington, DC Headquarters (1875 Connecticut Avenue, NW). City Year Washington, DC Alumna Featured in The Hill

In the August 6 issue of The Hill, City Year Washington, DC alumna Brianne Adderly was interviewed about her current position in Congressman Baird's (D-WA) office on Capitol Hill. Fast Company Features Partnership Between City Year DC and DC Public Schools

On August 4, Fast Company's website and blog featured an interview with DC Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and City Year Washington, DC Executive Director Jeff Franco. Chancellor Rhee and Jeff discuss the mutually beneficial partnership between City Year and DC Public Schools and the promising outcome of City Year's pilot program in four schools. Chancellor Rhee said she has "been thrilled with the results of this first year" and that she really appreciates how City Year "relishes being measured and held accountable."
