On Monday, January 18, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, City Year Washington, DC led a powerful day of community service at Ronald Brown Middle School and Houston Elementary School in Northeast DC. The event was sponsored by Corporate Executive Board and engaged over 600 community volunteers in service. The kick-off program included remarks from City Year CEO and Co-founder Michael Brown, Ronald Brown Middle School Principal Darrin Slade, Corporate Executive Board Chief Executive Officer Thomas Monahan, and Ward 7 DC Councilmember Yvette Alexander. City Year was also honored to have US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and his family attend the service event and paint a mural of US Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown, the school's namesake. Over 600 community volunteers and 100 City Year corps members painted inspirational murals and quotes, organized the library, and built bookshelves and benches for the library and courtyard. In addition, volunteers made no-sew blankets and toiletry kits for children transitioning between homes.
This was no ordinary day of service. It was also the official kick-off to City Year Washington DC's Young Heroes and City Heroes programs. More than 150 young people took the public pledge to serve in the Heroes program, a five-month service-learning and social justice program for middle school (Young Heroes) and high school (City Heroes) students. The Heroes kick-off was co-hosted by The Case Foundation Young Heroes Team corps member Andrés Harris and City Hero member Aimee Pollard. President and Co-founder of DC Central Kitchen Robert Egger expressed how proud he was that these young people were giving back to their community, and City Year CEO and Co-founder Michael Brown helped swear in the Heroes. City Year Executive Director Jeff Franco also gave remarks, thanking The Case Foundation and Bank of America for their support of the Heroes programs.
Thanks to Au Bon Pain, Buca di Beppo, DC Central Kitchen, Gist Family Catering, Honest Tea, Olive Garden, and Starbucks for providing the food and beverages for the day. And special thanks to all our community partners for working with City Year Washington, DC to put on an inspiring and transformational day of service!

Evan spoke to the importance of a friendly and functional educational space. He noted that the murals City Year painted, like the one with students in graduation gowns, provide students with inspiration and encouragement to stay in school.
